You invest in serums, treatments, and salon visits — but then tie your hair back with the same elastic you've had for years. That single habit might be undoing everything else.

Flare was built on a simple truth: the materials that touch your hair every single day matter as much as anything you put into it. Our silk and satin accessories don't just look beautiful — they actively protect, preserve, and strengthen your hair with every wear.

Why Flare

Six reasons silk & satin
are non-negotiable

01 — Zero Breakage

Every elastic is a tiny act of damage

Every time a regular elastic grips your hair, it creates uneven tension across the strand — tightest where the band bites deepest, and most damaging at the points where hair bends over itself.

02 — Frizz Control

Frizz is a friction problem — and silk solves it

When they're roughed up by abrasive materials, they lift and stay lifted, creating that familiar halo of frizz that no serum can fully undo once it sets in. Cotton scrunchies, polyester ribbons, and standard elastics drag across the cuticle every single time you style or remove them. Silk and satin glide.

03 — Material Science

Silk speaks the same language as your hair

Because silk and hair are chemically compatible, they interact harmoniously rather than creating conflict at the surface. Grade-A mulberry silk, which Flare uses exclusively, is the pinnacle of this material — each fibre produced under tightly controlled conditions for maximum uniformity, softness, and tensile strength.

04 — Moisture Retention

Your products should stay in your hair — not in your scrunchie

Cotton is highly absorbent — which is exactly what you want in a towel, and exactly what you don't want touching your hair. Every cotton scrunchie, headband, or ribbon you wear is actively drawing moisture and product residue out of your strands on contact.

05 — Inclusive by Design

Built for every curl, coil, wave, and strand

Hair damage is not experienced equally. Fine hair breaks faster under tension because each strand has a smaller diameter and lower strength threshold. Thick, coily hair experiences intense surface friction that disrupts curl pattern and leads to frizz and hairline thinning over time. Colour-treated and chemically processed hair is already more porous and fragile than virgin hair, making it far more vulnerable to both moisture loss and mechanical damage.

06 — Luxury Meets Function

It should look as good as it works

There is a persistent and frustrating myth in the beauty industry: that functional accessories must be plain, and beautiful ones must sacrifice performance. Flare was created specifically to disprove it. The natural lustre of grade-A mulberry silk is something no synthetic can replicate — it has a warm, dimensional sheen that catches light differently at every angle, making even a simple bun look considered and polished. Satin carries the same refined quality in a lighter form, its glossy surface draping with an ease that completes rather than interrupts your look.

Silk and satin are not indulgences. They are the quiet standard your hair has always deserved — and Flare makes that standard effortless.

— The Flare Philosophy

The science of silk & satin on your hair

To understand why silk and satin are so transformative for hair health, you have to start at the structural level — because what happens to your hair is largely invisible until it isn't. Every strand of human hair is built in layers. At the centre is the cortex, which gives hair its strength, elasticity, and colour. Surrounding it is the cuticle — a sleeve of overlapping, microscopic, scale-like cells that lie flat against each other when hair is healthy, creating a smooth, reflective surface. This outermost layer is your hair's primary defence against the world. And it is exquisitely vulnerable to mechanical damage.

When a rough material presses against, grips, or drags across the cuticle — as every conventional elastic, cotton scrunchie, and polyester headband does — those scales are forced apart. They lift, chip, and eventually break away entirely. This process happens at the microscopic level, which is why it goes unnoticed for so long. But the cumulative effect is very visible: hair that looks dull, feels rough, splits at the ends, snaps mid-shaft, and progressively loses density and shine over months and years. The damage is not dramatic — it accumulates so slowly, and so consistently, that most people blame their hair rather than the tools touching it every day.

Silk changes this dynamic entirely. Composed primarily of fibroin — a natural structural protein — silk shares a near-identical molecular architecture with your hair's own keratin. This biological compatibility is not incidental. It is the reason silk was observed, long before the science caught up with the observation, to be kinder to hair than any synthetic alternative. Because fibroin and keratin are chemically similar, silk does not create the molecular friction that rougher materials generate at the point of contact. The surface interaction is smooth and cooperative, rather than abrasive and competitive. The cuticle remains undisturbed.

What is also significant is what silk does not do: it does not absorb. Cotton and synthetic materials are hygroscopic — they draw moisture toward themselves from whatever they touch. Every hour your hair spends in contact with a cotton pillowcase, an elasticated cotton headband, or a standard synthetic scrunchie, those materials are wicking moisture out of your strands. The oils your scalp produces, the leave-in conditioner you applied, the overnight treatment you smoothed on — all of it is gradually drawn into the fabric rather than staying where it belongs. Silk, by contrast, has a low moisture absorption rate. It neither competes for moisture nor strips it. Your hair retains what you give it.

Satin operates on similar principles, though its origins are different. Where silk is defined by its fibre — the natural protein thread produced by silkworms — satin is defined by its weave. A satin weave creates a surface where most of the threads float on the top, producing that characteristic glossy, ultra-smooth finish regardless of the underlying fibre. At a lighter weight than pure silk, satin delivers much of the same cuticle-preserving, friction-reducing benefit in a more versatile, accessible format. For daytime accessories — scrunchies, headbands, claw clips — premium satin offers everything hair needs from its contact materials: smooth release, no grip, no crease, and no moisture theft. The practical results of switching are measurable within weeks. Dermatologists and trichologists who study hair damage consistently point to friction reduction as one of the most impactful — and most overlooked — variables in long-term hair health. Among the outcomes clinically associated with continued use of silk and satin accessories:

  • Significant reduction in cuticle disruption and surface friction damage
  • Decreased breakage at mid-shaft and near the root, where tension is highest
  • Improved moisture retention across the hair shaft
  • Maintained curl definition and reduced frizz in textured hair types
  • Reduced hairline recession associated with chronic elastic tension
  • Elimination of crease marks and style disruption on removal

Flare's silk and satin accessories smooth the cuticle rather than disrupting it. The result is hair that's consistently stronger, shinier, and more resilient — from root to tip.

Silk vs. satin — which is right for you?

Both materials are exceptional for hair health, but each has a moment where it shines. Pure mulberry silk is ideal for overnight wear, fine or fragile hair, and anyone who wants the most natural, protein-aligned material against their strands.

Satin excels as an everyday styling companion — lightweight and polished, it holds beautifully in headbands, scrunchies, and all-day clips. Many Flare devotees build a routine around both: silk for sleep, satin for style. Together, they create a complete layer of protection throughout your day and night.

Your night-time routine is where the magic happens

Most people spend time and money on their morning hair routine — the heat tools, the serums, the careful styling — and then undo all of it the moment they go to sleep. Eight hours of tossing and turning against a rough cotton pillowcase or a tight elastic creates more friction damage than almost anything else you do to your hair across the day. Strands are caught, pulled, and roughed up hundreds of times overnight, and by morning the evidence shows up as frizz, breakage, and a style that needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

The simplest upgrade you can make is also the most overlooked: swap your nighttime accessories for silk. A loose braid or bun secured with a Flare mulberry silk scrunchie, paired with a silk pillowcase, creates a protective sleep environment where your hair stays smooth, hydrated, and undisturbed. The cuticle stays sealed. Your products stay in the hair, not absorbed into cotton. And you wake up with hair that actually looks — and feels — like it was cared for overnight. It is the one change that works while you rest.

How to build your silk
& satin hair routine

01

Start with sleep — switch to silk overnight

Eight hours against a rough elastic is the fastest way to damage your hair. A Flare silk scrunchie or wrap at bedtime means less frizz, fewer tangles, and stronger strands within days.

02

Reach for satin for your daytime styles

Flare's satin scrunchies, headbands, and claw clips are your everyday go-to. Lightweight and polished, they hold every hair type without the friction or crease that cotton accessories leave behind.

03

Care for your accessories as you do your hair

Both silk and satin last beautifully with simple care — hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, lay flat to dry. Treat them with intention and they'll stay luxurious for years.

04

Build a complete silk & satin routine

The most dramatic results come from a full switch. The more touchpoints your hair has with Flare — sleep, style, and everything in between — the faster the improvement in strength and shine.
